How to Get 10% Off Toyota Car Rentals in Japan: A Complete Guide


If you’re planning a trip to Japan and want a reliable car rental experience, Toyota Rent a Car is one of the best options. In this guide, I’ll explain why I chose Toyota, how to join their online membership, and tips for maximising discounts while ensuring a smooth rental experience.

Why I Chose Toyota Rent a Car in Japan

Toyota is the largest car rental company in Japan, making it a reliable choice for travellers. While other online rental services may appear cheaper at first, they often add hidden fees, making the total cost similar to Toyota’s transparent pricing.

Key benefits of Toyota car rentals include:

  • Basic insurance included: Personal injury, property damage, and vehicle compensation.
  • Optional Safe W Plan: Covers tire damage, wheel cap loss, and NOC (Non-Operation Charge) for accidents. Extra coverage costs range from 2,000 yen to 5,000 yen.
  • Membership discount: Becoming a Toyota online member gives you 10% off rental fees.

How to Join Toyota’s Online Membership

Joining Toyota’s car rental membership is straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Set the Website Language to Japanese

On the Toyota Rent a Car homepage, switch the language to Japanese. This step is essential because the inquiry form and full membership options are only available in Japanese.

2. Start Registration

Click the log-in/new member button (as shown in the photo) to start. You can use your browser’s auto-translate feature to understand the registration process if you don’t read Japanese.

3. Enter Your Email and Verify

  • Enter your email address and receive a 6-digit verification code.
  • Enter the code to complete the email verification process.

4. Provide Your Name in Kanji and Katakana

Toyota requires both Kanji and Katakana versions of your name. Use this tool to generate them: Kanji Name Generator.


Simply enter your English name on the website to generate a Kanji name. I used John Smith for an example.


Then, just copy and paste the Katakana and Kanji name from the Kanji name generator for the online membership registration process.

How to fill the form:

  • For Kanji: Use the third result from the Kanji name generator (family name first, given name second).
  • For Katakana: Use the second result from the Kanji name generator (family name first, given name second).

5. Enter Address and Phone Number

You can use your hotel or Airbnb address and local phone number.

6. Set a Password

Use half-width numbers and English characters. This is only necessary if you’re using a Japanese keyboard.

Confirming Your Reservation and Discount

After joining the membership, I contacted Toyota to confirm my reservation details. Here are the key points I checked:

  • My husband only has an English name, but we used generated Kanji and Katakana names for his membership registration. We don’t have any official document that proves the Kanji name belongs to him.
  • So, I wanted to know if an international driver’s license, an Australian driver’s license, and a passport would be sufficient at pickup.
  • Confirmation that the 10% membership discount would apply without any issues.

Toyota replied that there were no problems with our booking or the discount. 👍

For my Japan trip, I booked cars in three cities:

  • First city (Utsunomiya): 20% off ( ワリビキGo 20: get 20% off your first booking as a Toyota member)
  • Second city (Otaru): 10% off
  • Third city (Sapporo): 10% off

Tips for a Smooth Toyota Car Rental in Japan

  • Always switch the website language to Japanese to access the inquiry form and full membership options.
  • Use ChatGPT or a translator to fill out the inquiry form if you don’t read Japanese.
  • Safe W Plan: Consider it if you want extra protection for tires, wheels, or potential NOC charges.
